If you've ever flipped over a box of conventional hair dye and felt overwhelmed by a long list of ingredients you can’t pronounce, you're not alone. Besides harsh chemicals and synthetic additives, you're also left with a headache. So what's really in chemical hair dye?

Periodic system of hair colour chemicals

I used to dye my hair with chemical hair dyes for over a decade; it never crossed my mind to seek an alternative because the mainstream beauty industry was all pushing the same stuff! So, I just kept applying it every month and fighting the dandruff, scalp destruction, and relentless itching it caused me until I discovered there was a natural alternative—an all-natural hair dye!

Here’s a breakdown of what you’ll never find in our natural hair dyes — and what we use instead to nourish your hair, naturally.

Chemical dye being applied to the hair

🚫 What’s Not in Our Natural Hair Dye, what's in chemical hair dye?

  • No Ammonia: Ammonia is commonly used to open the hair shaft so that the dye molecule can bind to the hair's cortex, but it can cause scalp irritation and dryness. Ammonia is an alkaline chemical, and the ideal pH for the scalp is around 5.5, rather acidic. This can lead to the scalp itching, flaking, and overall feeling unhappy. Our dye coats each strand in a protective, semi-translucent layer without attempting to aggressively penetrate it. Adding thickness and volume while colouring your hair gently and effectively.

  • No PPD (paraphenylenediamine): Often linked to allergic reactions, PPD is a big no-no, full stop. PPD can cause irritation to the skin and eyes and could also trigger asthma symptoms. In more severe cases, exposure to PPD can lead to dizziness, convulsions, and even coma. Our formulas are PPD-free, making them safer for everyone — including lactating mummas and those with skin conditions.

  • No Resorcinol, Sulphates, or Synthetic Fragrance: These are common in many dyes and can disrupt hormones, trigger allergies, and damage the hair. We leave them out completely. All you will smell are 100% herbs in our all-natural hair dyes!

✅ What’s In Our Natural Hair Dye

  • Henna (Lawsonia Inermis): A natural dye from the henna plant that binds to the protein in hair, leaving a rich, vibrant colour with a gorgeous shine. I

  • Indigo Leaf: Used to achieve darker tones, indigo pairs with henna to create a wide range of natural brunette to black shades — no chemicals required.

  • Amla, Aloe & Shikakai: These Ayurvedic herbs don’t just colour the hair — they strengthen roots, reduce dandruff, and promote healthy growth.

  • Cassia Obovata: Often referred to as "neutral henna," cassia conditions and adds a subtle golden shine without dramatically changing your hair colour.

Why It Matters

When you dye your hair, you’re putting ingredients directly on your scalp — your body’s most absorbent surface. What you put on your hair does make a difference to your health, and the long-term impact is worth paying attention to.

That’s why we’ve created shades and formulas that are clean, made just from plants, and genuinely safe. No greenwashing. No compromise. Just powerful botanicals that leave your hair looking (and feeling) its best.
