After many months of planning, writing, filming, testing and putting everything together, we're very excited to announce that our online course the Natural Hair Dye Course: Mastering Henna & Plant Hair Dyes is officially live. And better yet, we already had our first students complete the entire course!

Seeing the course move from an idea on paper into something people are actually working through has been incredibly exciting. This course has been a long time in the making, and we wanted to create something that brought together the practical experience of working with plant dyes with a clear methodical understanding of the science behind them.

An Online Course with a Different Approach to Henna Hair Colour

There is a huge amount of information available about henna and natural hair colour, but much of it focuses on individual recipes or specific colour results. That's ok if you just want to repeat the same colour or if you are not that particular about the results being accurate.

Natural hair colouring is more complex than simply choosing a recipe. The final result can be influenced by different factors and that's why this course looks at natural hair colouring as a complete process rather than simply providing a collection of recipes.

The course focuses on the four main plant powders used throughout natural hair colouring: henna, indigo, cassia and amla. With these four powders alone you'll be amazed at the colour variations that can be created. We've created shades like blonde, strawberry blonde, copper, auburn, red, ash brown, chocolate brown, black and even purple!

Each plant has its own properties and role within a colour mixture, and understanding those differences is an important part of creating reliable results.

Bringing the Science Into Practice

A large part of the course is dedicated to understanding what is happening during the colouring process. We look dye release and how controlling different variables impacts the colour, as well as how these factors can influence the behaviour of plant dye molecules.

The science is explained in a simple, practical way, without making it unnecessarily complicated. There are demonstrations throughout the course, including testing techniques that can be replicated at home.

Colour theory is an important part of the course. Understanding the starting colour of the hair, its underlying tones and how plant dyes interact with those tones makes it much easier to understand why a particular combination produces a particular result.

From Hair Preparation to Troubleshooting Mistakes

The course follows the complete natural hair colouring process.

It begins with the history and science of henna and plant dyes before moving into individual plant profiles, hair preparation, colour theory, paste preparation and application techniques.

Later modules cover aftercare, maintenance and troubleshooting, including some of the common problems people experience when working with natural hair dyes. We like to think that we really covered all angles here.

From perfecting beginner steps, through to advanced professional techniques. The goal of this course is to give you a complete set of skills that will enable you to either start or continue your knowledge on professional natural hair dyeing.

If you’ve been considering how to guarantee your colour results with natural hair dye or want to find a non-toxic alternative to dyeing hair then look no further than this course.

Eight Modules, Practical Resources and Support Materials

The course is made up of eight in-depth modules, covering:

  1. What Are Henna & Plant Hair Dyes – Their History & Science

  2. Plant Profiles for Plant Hair Dyes

  3. The Science Behind Better Results

  4. Hair Preparation & Assessment

  5. Colour Theory & Paste Mastery

  6. Application Prep & Techniques

  7. Aftercare & Maintenance

  8. Troubleshooting & Advanced Techniques

The course should take about 16-20 hours to complete depending on how long each student takes to study the downloadable resources and take the assessments.

The course includes video demonstrations, downloadable PDFs, quizzes and module reviews, giving students different ways to work through and revisit the information.

The aim was to create the resource we wished had existed when we first started working with plant dyes: a structured place where the information is brought together clearly, with both practical experience and science behind it.

And we're so very happy to finally share it with you!
