How to Prepare for the Course - The Natural Hair Dye Course: Mastering Henna & Plant Hair Dyes

Our new online course has been designed to take you step-by-step through 100% natural hair colouring and leave you with advanced knowledge of exactly how to manipulate your results using science to get consistent, beautiful results!

Throughout the course, we’ll be carrying out many practical tests, including but not limited to: strand tests, pH tests, temperature tests, and colour/shade experiments. To get the most from the course, it’s important to prepare your powders and tools ahead of time so you can follow along properly.

The Plant Powders You’ll Need

To test and explore the full colour capabilities of natural hair dyes taught throughout the course, we recommend having the four main plant powders in the course. To make this easier, we offer a complete Natural Hair Dye Bundle, which contains all the powders needed.

Of course, you’re welcome to source your powders yourself; just keep in mind that plant variety, quality, freshness, and purity vary between suppliers, which may affect your results.

The Tools You’ll Need

Alongside the powders, there are a few key tools that will help you complete the practical lessons and get the best learning experience. We’ve linked a few of the tools that we use below, but if you already have your own equipment or prefer a different brand, then that is also fine.

Measuring & Testing Tools - These will be especially important during the science and colour theory modules:

Recommended Application Tools

We generally advise against using metal tools unless you are 100% sure that they are stainless steel. Please bear in mind that any material that is light-coloured and/or made from a porous material will get stained, so don’t use your favourite wooden bowl. Below are some of the tools that we recommend gathering for the course.

  • Reusable Gloves – We provide one pair of disposable gloves with each 100g pouch of powder, but we find reusable gloves a great investment if you plan to do multiple applications. Find reusable gloves.

  • Dye applicator brush - Shop dye applicator brush

  • Plastic Mini Whisk – Helps make sure you get smooth, lump-free pastes. Find plastic whisk

  • Sectioning clips - Find sectioning clips

  • Wide-tooth comb - Shop comb

  • Human Hair Swatches – You can use your own hair, but we recommend buying natural human hair swatches in a blonde colour so that you can easily compare results and see them easily. Find hair swatches

  • Shower Cap – We provide one disposable shower cap with each 100g pouch of powder, but we find a reusable shower cap a great investment if you plan to do multiple applications on your own hair.

  • Clingfilm

  • Glass or ceramic bowls

  • Mixing spoons (stainless steel, ceramic, food-grade plastic)

  • Old, dark clothes and towels

Documentation Tools

One of the most important parts of learning natural hair dyes is recording your results. We provide downloadable PDF worksheets for some modules, but we also recommend a notebook and labels to help you remember and organise your findings.

Documenting your recipes, timings, and results will help you refine your process over time and build a routine that works for your hair.

Preparing in advance will make your course experience smoother and help you get the most from each lesson. Having everything ready means you can focus on learning, testing, and building confidence rather than stopping midway to find what you need.

Whether you choose our ready-made Natural Hair Dye Bundle or source your own materials, preparation is one of the best ways to set yourself up for success.

The course officially launches on Friday 31st July, and we're so excited to share it with you.

We can’t wait to welcome you, see you on the inside!
