Preparation for Henna Hair Dye

One of the biggest secrets to a successful henna or plant hair dye application is preparation. Spending just a few minutes getting everything ready before you begin will make the whole experience far more enjoyable. You'll feel calmer, apply it more efficiently, create less mess, and achieve better results. This is the exact preparation routine we've followed for over ten years, both professionally and personally.

Choose the Right Space

Henna can stain porous surfaces and fabrics. Choosing the right location helps keep cleanup quick and stress-free. A bathroom or kitchen with wipeable surfaces such as ceramic or tile is usually the best place to apply, as these rooms tend to have wipe-clean surfaces and easy access to water.

Before you start, make sure your space has:

  • Good natural lighting so you can clearly see your sections and any greys

  • A mirror - the bigger the better

  • Access to water or a spray bottle nearby

Protect Your Surroundings

Taking a minute to protect your workspace can save scrubbing later.

Cover nearby surfaces with old towels, or some protective covering where your bowl and tools will be. If you're applying henna over carpet, wood, laminate or any other porous flooring, it's also worth protecting the floor beneath you with something non-permeable, as henna can leave permanent stains.

Dress for the Occasion

Henna doesn't just colour hair—it can permanently stain fabric too.

Wear old or dark-coloured clothing that you won't mind getting marked, and place a dark towel or salon cape over the shoulders during application.

For the first few days after colouring, it's also a good idea to use dark towels and even a dark pillowcase while your colour fully settles and oxidises.

Gather Everything Before You Begin

One mistake we see time and time again is people starting their application before everything is within reach. Once you've got gloves on and henna paste in your hands, the last thing you want is to be searching for clips or running across the room dripping paste everywhere. Not only does it create unnecessary stress, but it also slows down your application.

Before mixing or applying your paste, have the following ready:

  • Your bowl(s) of dye-released plant paste

  • Application gloves (included)

  • Four to six sectioning clips (longer or thicker hair might need six)

  • Kitchen roll and/or a damp cloth for quick clean-ups

  • Old towels to protect yourself and your workspace

  • An applicator brush

  • Disposable casava shower cap (included) as the first layer

  • Reusable shower cap/head wrap/ clingfilm - a second layer to seal and secure.

We personally use a disposable shower cap first, and then a re-usable shower cap or head wrap on top. But you can use cling film to seal and secure the first layer instead if you don't have these items.

Prevent Skin Staining

Henna stains skin for the same reason it stains hair—it binds to proteins. Without a little care, you may notice temporary orange or brown marks around your hairline, ears, or neck.

Many people like to apply a protective barrier around the hairline using petroleum jelly, or a thick balm. These products can help prevent staining, but be careful not to get them onto the hair itself, as they can create a barrier that prevents the henna from binding properly.

Personally, we rarely use a barrier. Instead, we apply the paste carefully and wipe away any paste from the skin immediately with a cotton pad. After years of practice, we find this gives the cleanest result without risking balms or oils getting onto the hair. However, if you're new to henna, using a barrier can provide a little extra confidence while you're learning.

A little preparation goes a long way. With your workspace organised and everything ready before you begin, you'll be able to relax, enjoy the process and focus on what really matters—creating beautiful, healthy, naturally coloured hair.
